Dr. Fotios Kalfas is a specialist in Neurosurgery, currently practicing at Villa Erbosa in Bologna.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sassari in 2000 and earned a specialization in Neurosurgery in 2005 with top honors (50/50 cum laude). His professional development includes extensive international experience in neurosurgery, with training and research stays in the United States, Japan, Finland, and Brazil to refine surgical techniques.

Since 2005, Dr. Kalfas has been a full-time Neurosurgeon. He began his career at the Moriggia Pelascini Hospital in Gravedona and, starting in 2006, served at the Galliera Hospital in Genoa. There, he held positions of increasing responsibility, including High Specialization roles, Deputy Chief of the Neurosurgery Department, and Acting Director of the Neurosurgery Unit in 2019.

In 2020, Dr. Kalfas joined the University Hospital of Padua as a Neurosurgery Consultant, where he worked until 2024 before transitioning to Villa Erbosa.

His advanced training at leading national and international centers has shaped his expertise in neuro-oncology, neurovascular surgery, and complex spinal surgery.

Dr. Kalfas specializes in complex spinal procedures for conditions such as:

  • Degenerative vertebral deformities: herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis
  • Myelopathy
  • Post-traumatic, pathological, and osteoporotic vertebral fractures
  • Vertebral tumors
  • Nerve entrapment syndromes: carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, and common peroneal nerve  

With 20 years of neurosurgical experience and over 5,100 high-complexity surgical procedures, Dr. Kalfas has a strong focus on minimally invasive techniques, advanced technologies, and cutting-edge materials in spinal surgery.  

He has contributed to three scientific studies:

  • Intraoperative angiography in cerebral aneurysm surgery
  • Endoscopic resection of the transverse carpal ligament for carpal tunnel syndrome using the Agee Technique
  • Key Hole Microneurosurgical Evacuation (KHMNE technique) for spontaneous supratentorial cerebral hematomas  

Dr. Kalfas has authored 20 scientific publications in international journals and is an active participant in national and international conferences, staying at the forefront of developments in neurosurgery.
