Neonatology and Neonatal Pathology

Neonatology encompasses a series of medical competences built around maternal and infant care. The expertise of Ospedale San Raffaele both in managing complex maternal conditions during pregnancy and in labor and in providing high intensity on-site support to a newborn makes the hospital a safe place where a mother and a child receive necessary assistance.

The Neonatal Pathology group of Ospedale San Raffaele makes use of decades of multidisciplinary experience in newborncare, even in the case of complex neonatal pathologies and maternal pathologies arising before or during pregnancy that may cause preterm birth.

The research lines in Neonatology mainly concern two clinical areas: the study of the central nervous system in newborns and the outcome of pregnancies in diabetic mothers. Since January 2018, the Neonatology and Pediatric Immunohematology Departments of Ospedale San Raffaele have implemented neonatal screening in collaboration with the Meyer Hospital of Florence to identify newborns potentially affected by primary immunodeficiency at an early stage.
