Adult Ophthalmology

GSD ophthalmology area is divided into several subspecialties covering all fields of ophthalmology that results in a higher competence of a single physician in a disease group of his/ her professional focus. The teams are closely connected with each other and with the other hospital departments to ensure a multidisciplinary response, even in case of complex systemic diseases.

In regard to the diagnosis, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and tests are available. For the treatment of numerous eye diseases, multiple specialist surgical and para-surgical treatments are available, such as intravitreal injection, filtration surgery, minimally invasive vitrectomy, retinal laser, laser trabeculoplasty, artificial retina implant, orthoptic rehabilitation treatments, dacryocystorhinostomy. Over the years, there have been developed specialization concerning cornea treatments, such as keratoplasty (perforating, PK; deep lamellar, DALK; posterior lamellar, DSAEK; descemetic lamellar, DMEK), removal of primary and recurrent pterygium with conjunctival grafting, complex cataract interventions, amniotic membrane graft, cross-linking treatment (CXL).

The Ophthalmology Department of Ospedale San Raffaele is accredited by the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) and has been recognized by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) as an adequate training facility to welcome specialists from all overthe world. It is part of the European Vision Institute (EVI.CT.SE), a European network of ophthalmological clinical research centers, dedicated to conducting clinical research activities with the highest quality standards, an important resource for the development of translational research with particular attention to industrial innovation for medical and pharmaceutical devices. In addition, Ophthalmology of San Raffaele has been chosen by the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO) as the location for fellowship in the field of retinal diseases.
