The Shoulder Surgery Unit is one of the centres of excellence in the international scene for the treatment of all types of shoulder pathologies. The head physician and his team are well known shoulder surgeons for open and arthroscopic treatment of shoulder pathologies. The treatment of shoulder instability constitutes the strong point of this group as demonstrated by the many publications in international journals of high scientific calibre and supported by the large population of patients already undergoing interventional procedures for shoulder stabilization.

The scientific activity is aimed at perfecting the surgical and therapeutic methods of shoulder pathology. Particular attention is paid to the elaboration of biological and functional aspects with the development of surgical techniques, materials and dedicated tools.

Rotator Cuff Pathology

The Unit has great experience in the treatment of rotator cuff pathologies. The injuries of the shoulder tendons, in particular the widespread rotator cuff tears, are repaired by arthroscopic surgery. This technique allows, by means of a camera view, to "work" inside the shoulder by making small cutaneous incisions with consequent optimization of the post-operative recovery methods.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Rotator cuff tendinosis and tears
  • Impingement syndromes
  • Calcific tendonitis
  • Suprascapular nerve impingement

Top Procedures:

  • Arthroscopy

Shoulder Instability

The Unit has pioneered the interventional treatment of shoulder instability, inventing and perfecting the technique of Arthroscopic Bone Block procedure, Arthroscopic Latarjet and Arthroscopically assisted Latarjet. Arthroscopic shoulder operations are performed for both degenerative and traumatic diseases. In addition, reconstructive surgery of the shoulder ligaments makes use of arthroscopic techniques in many cases.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Shoulder instability without bone loss
  • Shoulder instability with bone loss
  • Multidirectional instability
  • SLAP lesions

Top Procedures:

  • Arthroscopic Bone Block Procedure
  • Arthroscopic Latarjet
  • Arthroscopically assisted Latarjet

Shoulder Arthritis

The Unit has great surgical experience on Resurfacing, Hemi, Anatomic and Reverse shoulder prosthesis as well as conservative treatment of degenerative shoulder pathology. Open surgery is indicated in some cases of recurrent shoulder dislocation. Evolutionary arthrosis of the shoulder is often severely disabling, can be treated through the implantation of the most modern dedicated prostheses.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Primary arthritis
  • Rotator cuff arthroplasty
  • Post-traumatic arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis

Top Procedures:

  • Shoulder Prothesis
    • Resurfacing hemi-arthroplasty
    • Stemmed hemi-arthroplasty
    • Reverse arthroplasty
    • Anatomic arthroplasty

  • Shoulder arthroscopy equipment
