Meralgia paresthetica (Bernhardt-Roth syndrome)

What is it?

It is a syndrome that affects the lateral cutaneous nerve in the thigh.

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by a significant increase or decrease in body weight, traumatic consequences and permanent compression by orthopedic appliances (e.g. corsets).

Which are the symptoms?

This syndrome is characterized by pain and formication in the front of the thigh with concomitant sensory impairment.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is mostly clinical. Electromyography may not play a significant role.

How is it treated?

First-choice treatment is medical: anti-inflammatory agents and physical therapy.

In resistant forms, surgical treatment is indicated to resolve the problem. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, the average hospital stay is 3 days.
