Knee arthrosis

What is it?

Arthrosis of the knee joint is the degeneration and inflammation of the cartilage that covers the joint. The cartilage's function is to ensure that the joint glides properly. When the degeneration begins, the affected joint becomes painful and stiff.

Causes and risk factors

The causes can be mechanical (congenital structural changes), acquired forms (infections, necrosis, trauma, osteoporosis), overweight and age. Sports and intense work activities with stress on the lower limbs can accelerate the physiological process of cortical degeneration.

Which are the symptoms?

The clinical examination is very indicative and is characterised by swelling, pain and stiffness of the knee, often accompanied by a limp and difficulty walking.

How is it diagnosed?

The clinical examination is very indicative and the X-ray of the knee joints confirms the diagnosis.

How is it treated?

Conservative treatment with fans, physiotherapy, hyaluronic acid infiltrations and regenerative therapies can be used in the early stages of knee osteoarthritis. Total knee arthroplasty is the recommended surgical treatment in advanced stages remitting to conservative treatments.
