Hip arthrosis

What is it?

Osteoarthritis of the hip joint is degeneration and inflammation of the cartilage that covers the joint. The cartilage's function is to ensure that the joint glides properly. When the degeneration begins, the affected joint becomes painful and stiff.

Causes and risk factors

The causes may be of mechanical origin (due to congenital structural changes) as well as acquired forms (infections, ischaemic necrosis, trauma, osteoporosis, etc.). Sports and intense work activities with stress on the lower limbs can accelerate the physiological process of cortical degeneration.

Which are the symptoms?

Groin pain and functional limitation, often associated with a limp.

How is it diagnosed?

The clinical examination is very revealing and a hip X-ray confirms the diagnosis.

How is it treated?

Conservative treatment with fans, physiotherapy, hyaluronic acid infiltration and regenerative therapies can be used in the early stages of arthrosis. Total hip arthroplasty is the recommended surgical treatment in advanced stages that do not respond to conservative treatment.
