Alström syndrome

What is it?

Alström Syndrome (ALMS) is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder first described in 1959 by Karl-Henry Alström.

Which are the symptoms?

It is mainly characterized by progressive onset of retinal degeneration, hearing loss, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In 1997, the gene responsible for the syndrome (ALMS1) was first located on the short arm of chromosome 2 (2p13).
