Biography

Dr. Giorgio Canepa is a urologist at the Urology Unit of the Istituto di Cura Città di Pavia.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Genoa in 1983. He then obtained specializations in Digestive System Surgery in 1988, Thoracic Surgery in 1993, and Urology in 2000.

Since December 1991, he has held the position of Urology Assistant at the Urology Division of the E.O. Ospedali Galliera in Genoa, following a public competition. In 1997, he was promoted to First-Level Manager at the Urology Unit of the E.O. Ospedali Galliera.

Dr. Canepa has been focused on the diagnosis and treatment of functional urology and urinary incontinence in both men and women since 1995, particularly through the execution and reporting of urodynamic tests. In November 2000, he obtained a Specialization in Urology from the University of Genoa.

Since 2005, he has performed sacral neuromodulator implants for cases of neurogenic and idiopathic overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder due to partial spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, degenerative central diseases like Parkinson's disease, or vascular brain lesions.

Since 2008, he has served as co-responsible for male functional pathology, overactive bladder pathology, and neuro-urological pathologies within the Multidisciplinary Center for Urogynecological, Male Urological, and Pelvic Floor Diseases.

In addition to endoscopic surgeries for bladder and prostate neoplastic and functional pathologies, Dr. Canepa specializes in:

  • Evaluation of bladder urinary functions and defects through specialist consultations
  • Urodynamic tests, including uroflowmetry, to guide patients toward rehabilitative or surgical treatments for stress and urgency urinary incontinence

In 2015, he was appointed Regional Certifying Officer for the rare pathology of Interstitial Cystitis and Chronic Pelvic Pain. Since 2021, he has been a Urology Consultant for the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association.

Throughout his career, Dr. Canepa has attended and completed several professional development courses, including:

  • Advanced surgical techniques for restoring continence after radical prostatectomy and reconstructing neobladders after radical cystectomy at the Urology Clinic of the University of Ancona in 1993
  • Techniques for rehabilitation and biofeedback in the treatment of urinary incontinence at the Urogynecology Service of Montecchio Hospital (Reggio Emilia) in 1994
  • Urodynamic methodologies and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to female urinary incontinence at the Bristol Urological Institute, Southmead Hospital, Bristol, under Prof. P. Abrams in 1998

He received recognition from the European Association of Urology for Best Poster Presentation in the session "More on BPH medical therapy" at the XV Congress in Brussels in April 2000.

In September 2007, he served as President of the XXXI National Congress of the Italian Society of Urodynamics in Genoa. He was also the President and Scientific Director of the International Genoa Incontinence Congress from January 2009 to January 2020. Since 2008, he has been the Regional Head for Liguria of the Interdisciplinary Regional Group (GIR) of the Italian Society of Urodynamics (SIUD).

He is the author and co-author of over 100 scientific articles published in international journals.
