Alberto Giori

Dr. Alberto Giori, a specialist in General Surgery with thirty years of experience in the field of Colorectal Surgery, is a General Surgeon and Proctologist at the Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unit of the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1984. In 1989, he completed his specialization in General Surgery at the University of Milan. In 2008, he obtained the I.Re.F. diploma as a Head of Complex Structure in the Hospital Area from the Superior School of Health in the Lombardy Region.

He has completed training stages in Italy and abroad to deepen his expertise in laparoscopic, oncological, and colorectal-anal surgery techniques:

• Training at the 3rd Surgical Clinic of the University of Rome for theoretical and practical improvement in Endorectal Ultrasound (Rome, 1998);
• European Surgical Institute (Hamburg, Germany - 2001) - Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Course;
• Internship Center for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery (S.A.C.M.I) – Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Center (Padua, Italy - 2001) Surgical Training;
• Kh St. Elisabeth Hospital (Vienna, Austria - 2005) Surgical Training, Surgical Treatment of Obstructed Defecation Syndrome / Stapled Transanal Rectum Resection (Starr-Longo Technique);
• Pelvic Floor Center (Montecchio, Italy - 2007) Pelvic Floor Surgery;
• European Surgical Institute (Hamburg, Germany - 2009) Hands-on Training for Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection with Contur Transtar Curved Cutter Stapler Procedure Set.

His roles include:

• Regional representative for the Lombardy region of the “SIUCP” (Italian Society of Coloproctology);
• Tutor of the General Surgery Specialization School at the University of Milan;
• Consultant oncological surgeon at LILT (Italian League for the Fight Against Cancer).

Throughout his career, he has passionately dedicated himself to research and clinical practice in the field of Coloproctology, with a particular focus on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the:

• Colon;
• Rectum;
• Anus;
• Pelvic compartment.

In the field of specialized proctological diagnostics, he has acquired significant expertise in the use of 360° 3D Endoanal-Endorectal Ultrasound, Anorectal Manometry, Anoscopy, and Rectoscopy.

In the therapeutic field, he has developed extensive experience in treating proctological diseases using the most modern surgical techniques (including Laser and Ultrasound), selecting those that best suit each individual patient, according to the concept of personalized surgery (“tailored surgery”).

He has participated in an international study group of experts in Regenerative Therapy, conducting research and clinical studies on the use of Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the treatment of proctological diseases.

Following a clinical trial approved by the ethics committee and conducted in collaboration with Prof. Carlo Tremolada (investigator and creator of the regenerative technique Lipogems®) and Prof. Arnold Caplan (head of the Biology department at Case Western University in Cleveland, USA), he published the first paper in the world literature on anal sphincter incontinence treated with non-expanded autologous mesenchymal stem cells (Lipogems® technique), titled “Recovery of Function in Anal Incontinence After Micro-Fragmented Fat Graft (Lipogems®) Injection: Two Years Follow Up of the First 5 Cases” - CellR4 (2015).

This work effectively paved the way for Regenerative Therapy in the field of proctology.

Further results of his technique have also been published in the monograph “Management of Fecal Incontinence” - Springer Publisher (2016).
