CURRICULUM VITAE

  • President of SICVE – Italian Society of Vascular Surgery (2015)
  • President of SVC - Société de Chirurgie Vasculaire de Langue Française (2013)
  • Appointed Full Professor of Vascular Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (2010)

DEPARTMENT
The primary objective of the department of Vascular Surgery of Ospedale San Raffaele is to improve life quality and expectancy of patients afflicted with vascular diseases, which are becoming increasingly widespread. What makes our department a centre of excellence recognized at European level is the ability to develop a personalized therapeutic plan for each single patient, thanks to an efficient integration of cutting edge diagnostic techniques, clinical activity, and surgical and interventional activity. All this has been made possible through a tight cooperation with Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, which allows a crucial support for clinical research activity, translational research and for the organization and participation in clinical trial projects.

VASCULAR SURGERY PROCEDURES

  • Aneurysmal pathologies of the thoracic aorta, abdominal aorta, thoracic-abdominal aorta, and legs
  • Steno-occlusive diseases of aorta, iliac arteries, and legs
  • Acute and chronic dissection of the thoracic-abdominal aorta
  • Carotid artery stenosis, vertebral and subclavian stenosis, diseases of the glomus aorticum
  • Aortic arch diseases
  • Thoracic outlet diseases
  • Visceral arteries diseases (celiac tripod, superior mesenteric artery, renal arteries, ligamentum arcuatum syndrome)
  • Superficial and deep venous diseases of the legs
  • Abdominal venous diseases (inferior vena cava syndrome, Nutcracker syndrome)
  • Multidisciplinary management of critical leg ischemia (medical therapy, endovascular treatment, bypass, bone marrow electro-stimulators).

KEY FACTS & TECHNOLOGY

  • 3 non-invasive vascular diagnostics ambulatories, complete with latest-generation color doppler echocardiography equipment
  • Medical practices equipped with the most modern information technology support for surgery timing and programming
  • Operating theaters capable of receiving any kind of disease and surgical procedure, each theater is equipped with an angiography and color doppler echocardiography unit
  • A neurostimulation ambulatory capable of programming and controlling the bone marrow electro-stimulators that are implanted for the follow-up of patients suffering from chronic pain, which is not treatable with medicines; an ambulatory for the periodical follow-up of patients suffering from arterial, venous, mixed and lymphatics trophic lesions.

DIDACTICS AND RESEARC
Didactics

  • Director of the School of Specialization in Vascular Surgery at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele of Milan
  • Director of the second level Master in Aortic Surgery
  • Theoretical-practical lessons in integrated courses for the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery
  • Seminars within the International degree course in Medicine and Surgery (MD Program)
  • Theoretical-practical lessons in integrated courses for the Degree Course in Nursery Sciences.

Research
Research activity is aimed at the:

  • Study and development of innovative endoprosthesis for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms and of aneurysms and dissections of the thoracic aorta
  • Evaluation of neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring methods to minimize the risk of bone marrow complications during thoraco-abdominal surgery
  • Study of drug-eluting stents and balloons for the treatment of peripheral artery diseases.

CLINICAL ACTIVITY
DEPARTMENTS

The activities of the Division of Vascular Surgery shows its excellence in the following fields:

  • Open and Endovascular Surgery of the aorta and its branches
  • Arterial surgery of carotids and precerebral vases
  • Reconstructive surgery of arteries of lower limbs
  • Surgery of severe arteriovenous malformations
  • Surgery of venous disease

Patients are offered the most innovative techniques for surgery of aortic aneurysms, using both traditional techniques and endoprosthesis, with minimally invasive approaches.
We perform surgery on all arterial districts: from the chronic ischemia of the lower limbs and ischemic limb salvage to the pathologies of the carotid arteries. We carry out also interventions on the venous compartment with modern techniques which can be performed in outpatient clinics (radio frequency). We have strong experience in the surgical treatment of severe arteriovenous malformations and endovascular reconstructive aortic surgery.

NUMBERS - year 2014
Interventions: 500 including:

  • Arterial: 250
  • Aneurysms: 50
  • Supra-aortic trunks: 80
  • Peripheral reconstructive surgery: 70.

OUTPATIENT SERVICES

  • Specialistic outpatient examination
  • Doppler ultrasound of supra-aortic trunks
  • Doppler ultrasound of aorta and iliac arteries
  • Doppler ultrasound of the arteries of the upper and lower limbs
  • Doppler ultrasound of abdominal veind and lower limb veins
  • CT angiography with reconstructions
  • MRI angiography.
