The primary objective of the department of Vascular Surgery of Ospedale San Raffaele is to improve life quality and expectancy of patients afflicted with vascular diseases, which are becoming increasingly widespread. What makes our department a centre of excellence recognized at European level is the ability to develop a personalized therapeutic plan for each single patient, thanks to an efficient integration of cutting edge diagnostic techniques, clinical activity, and surgical and interventional activity. All this has been made possible through a tight cooperation with Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, which allows a crucial support for clinical research activity, translational research and for the organization and participation in clinical trial projects.


  • Aneurysmal pathologies of the thoracic aorta, abdominal aorta, thoracic-abdominal aorta, and legs

  • Operating theaters capable of receiving any kind of disease and surgical procedure, each theater is equipped with an angiography and color doppler echocardiography unit
  • A neurostimulation ambulatory capable of programming and controlling the bone marrow electro-stimulators that are implanted for the follow-up of patients suffering from chronic pain, which is not treatable with medicines; an ambulatory for the periodical follow-up of patients suffering from arterial, venous, mixed and lymphatics trophic lesions.

  • Evaluation of neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring methods to minimize the risk of bone marrow complications during thoraco-abdominal surgery
  • Study of drug-eluting stents and balloons for the treatment of peripheral artery diseases.

The activities of the Division of Vascular Surgery shows its excellence in the following fields:

  • Open and Endovascular Surgery of the aorta and its branches
  • Arterial surgery of carotids and precerebral vases
  • Reconstructive surgery of arteries of lower limbs
  • Surgery of severe arteriovenous malformations
  • Surgery of venous disease

Patients are offered the most innovative techniques for surgery of aortic aneurysms, using both traditional techniques and endoprosthesis, with minimally invasive approaches.
We perform surgery on all arterial districts: from the chronic ischemia of the lower limbs and ischemic limb salvage to the pathologies of the carotid arteries.We carry out also interventions on the venous compartment with modern techniques which can be performed in outpatient clinics (radio frequency).We have strong experience in the surgical treatment of severe arteriovenous malformations and endovascular reconstructive aortic surgery.
