Shoulder Surgery

Our activities focus on shoulder pathologies and their treatment with surgical techniques (mainly arthroscopic).

Arthroscopic interventions on shoulder are performed both for degenerative and traumatic diseases.

Injuries to the tendons of the shoulder, especially the widespread rotator cuff tears, are repaired thanks to arthroscopic surgical interventions. Thanks to a camera, such technique allows to perform an operation making small cutaneous incisions. This results in optimization of postoperative recovery.

Also reconstructive surgery of the shoulder ligaments relies in many cases on arthroscopic techniques.

In some cases of recurrent dislocation of the shoulder open surgery is indicated. The shoulder arthritis, which is often progressive and severely disabling, can be treated by using the most modern implants.

This highly specialized Unit focuses on major orthopaedic surgery of the shoulder, knee and hip.

 

Here the most performed surgical interventions: prosthetic surgery of Knee, Hip and Shoulder. Minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgery of Shoulder, Knee, elbow, ankle, wrist and foot.

Knee prosthetic surgery is performed with a cutting edge technology called PSI (Patient Specific Instrumentation).

Clinicians plan the intervention after a CT scan using a specific software. The results are sent to a USA institute  which makes special guides to cut the bone in a very precise way, so the prosthesis adapts perfectly to the  bone.

 

Scientific activity focuses on the improvement of surgical and therapeutic techniques of shoulder diseases.Particular attention is given to biological and functional aspects with development of surgical techniques, materials and tools.

The Unit directed by Prof Pietro Randelli is also recognized as a teaching center of the International Society ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) and ISAKOS (International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medice). Many experts from all over the world participate here to fellowships.

Prof Pietro Randelli, who is Member of the Executive Committee and Education and Fellowship Committee Chairman of ESSKA and Vice-Chairman of SIGASCOT, invites Italian and European specialists so as to analyze the most modern surgical techniques.

Our research was given important awards including the Fukuda prize for the best scientific work at the International Congress of Shoulder Surgery (Edinburgh 2010).

The American Academy Orthopaedic Surgeon officially invited Pietro Randelli in 2010 and 2011 as international opinion leader  for the use of platelet rich plasma in shoulder surgery.
Other research lines are related to prosthetic surgery of knee and shoulder, even with patented projects on clinicaltrials.gov.
