Massimo Candiani

San Raffaele Hospital - Specialized in obstetrics and laparoscopic surgery technique

It is the leading centre in Italy for the surgical treatment of tumours (benign and malignant) of the female genital tract. The unit represents an international centre of excellence also due to the advanced diagnostic equipment present at the institute.

The Unit’s main activities are:

  • Cancer demolitive and staging laparotomic surgery
  • Conservative and demolitive laparotomic and vaginal surgery of the genital tract for benign diseases
  • Urogynaecological reparative surgery: genital prolapse, urinary incontinence
  • Endoscopic surgery: diagnostic and operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy using innovative methods and tools that support an increasingly broad field of application and represent a valid alternative to laparotomic surgery.

The Unit carries out an intense gynaecological cancer surgery and chemotherapy activity; 1200 major surgical operations are performed per year, of which a large number concern endoscopic surgery and pelvic static surgery.

In addition to the normal activity carried out in the delivery room (over 1700 births in 2013), particular competence has been acquired in ‘Pregnancy-Related Diseases’ (diabetes, hypertension, etc.) and clinical high-risk pregnancy management. Pregnant women are given access, free of charge, to the painless childbirth procedure with epidural analgesia. Courses leading up to childbirth and meetings for mothers and babies are organized and specific outpatient psychological consulting and psychotherapy services, both directed by a psychologist, are provided.

The Science of Childbirth Centre – Reproductive pathophysiology receives a large number of sterile couples every year, giving them access to the very latest techniques (IVF-ET, ICSI). More than 1000 cycles of assisted conception are administered every year.

The numerous lines of research developed include:

  • Biology of female genital tumours
  • Early diagnosis of female genital tumours
  • Development of surgery and chemotherapy-based lines of treatment
  • Minimally-invasive surgical techniques.

  • Non-invasive prenatal diagnostic methods (testing the mother’s blood for foetal DNA)
  • Pathophysiology of gestational hypertension (identification of new biochemical markers) and gestational diabetes
  • Diagnostic imaging.

Birth centre:

  • Reproductive pathophysiology
  • Assisted conception methods
  • Pathophysiology of infertility of couples.

The Unit houses the Gynaecology and Obstetrics course of the Specialist Degree in Medicine and the School of Specialization in Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
It is a training centre for students on the Degree course in Nursing Sciences and the Master’s degree in Nursing and Obstetrics Management for the coordinating functions.
The Unit also houses postgraduate stages for both Italian and foreign doctors specialized in Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
