The Unit is the leading centre in the region for the study and treatment of Diabetes and is one of the International Clinical Centers of TrialNet, a consortium of research centres of the National Institutes of Health for the prevention of type 1 diabetes based in the USA.
It houses clinical research and experimentation activities in the field of diabetes, endocrine-metabolic diseases and endocrine cancer for the identification, validation and clinical transfer of medicinal products and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The entire medical, nursing, technical and administrative staff of the Unit plays an active part in all the healthcare, research and teaching activities, with a view to combining scientific and professional excellence with a human approach to patient care.

Diabetes and, with it, all endocrine-metabolic diseases, represent one of the traditional lines of research conducted at San Raffaele Hospital, which has acquired and consolidated, over the years, considerable visibility and an international reputation in this field. The research activities are carried out with the involvement of the facilities and staff of the Unit, within the Department of Internal and Specialized Medicine, and the Research Units of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) and the Metabolic and Cardiovascular Research Department.
